The slat is the horizontal strip with which your shutter is made and can be tilted open/closed within the frame. The size of the slat is an entirely personal preference, but as a general guide, you should want to try to match the size of the slat with the size of your window:

64mm slats - Ideal for any size window and is the most popular choice.

76mm slats - Suitable for medium to large windows.

89mm slats - Best suited for very large windows only.

Larger slat sizes mean that your shutter will be comprised of fewer slats, and it may be easier to see through the window and allow more light through when the slats are tilted open (compared to that of a smaller slat size); however, the larger slat size may protrude from your shutter frame slightly. For this reason, the 64mm slat is a better all-around choice.
